My older sister gave birth this morning. It’s her 4th – a beautiful boy, and I am happy from the bottom of my heart!! Finally I can shed happy tears.
Yesterday I drove into town, to Only Hair, a unique hairdressing salon that creates natural hair wigs.
The idea of having a wig that I place on my head like a hat isn’t for me… on the other hand; I can’t bear the thought of walking around bald, or even sleeping bald. I don’t want to see myself without hair. As far as I’m concerned that is the worse and scariest part of this whole thing and I told myself from the start that on this, I am not compromising. I checked out all my options and arrived at Only Hair through my ‘cancer friend’ who had used their services herself.
Once there, they took my head measurements and a cutting of my hair, they send it to the US, where they make a wig especially for me, and then (after shaving my head, of course) they stick it to my scalp. I’ll be able to shower with it, shampoo, condition, blow dry… I can even decide that I want streaks…
My first visit back will be after I begin treatments, my hair won’t have fallen out completely, so they will be shaving my head and then sticking it on. Then, they cut and blow dry so it looks just like my natural hair… I might even consider putting in a color… That’s it. I go home looking like I had been to the hairdresser. The guy also explained that only a 20 kg pull could rip it off my head (my son weighs 13kg – so I’ll be safe for a whileJ)
Once all that is done I go back every 3 weeks; they remove the wig, shave my head, fix it, apply a conditioning treatment, stick it back on, blow dry etc. The whole thing costs 5500 NIS and each visit is an additional 180. Worth the money? It better be!! I’ve already paid!
I am still deliberating what I should do with my eyebrows (yes, they go too… so do the eye lashes.) A few people recommended permanent make up while others said absolutely not … from what was explained to me the eyebrows and lashes are the last to go and the first to grow back – I hope!
Thing is, from what I understood (from the guy at Only Hair), drawing on the eyebrows makes you look even stranger. He suggested that for that short period I just use a pencil to draw them on. In any case, if I do decide to do it, it needs to happen now because once I start the Chemo, there is no way anyone will agree to touch me.
